Why focusing on your career won't make you more successful

I love this story...

A client spoke to me recently about how she would spend at work all the hours God sent. She was always Miss Reliable to entertain guests from other offices when they were in town, while her ExCo colleagues went home to their families. She was in the office early, left late, and often spent time in the office in the weekend getting organised for the next week.

One Wednesday evening she went to her local pizzeria with one of said overseas guests, and she was gob-smacked to see that the place was heaving! Brimming with people enjoying themselves...on a Wednesday night.

You see, she put so much into the career she was so passionate about that she didn't have time or energy for much else. She saved her 'fun time' up for the weekend...except by that stage, she was too exhausted to do much more than sleep, and watch Netflix.

That night in the pizzeria she realised things had to change. She needed to drink in more of life, instead of filling her life with work.

Drink in More of Life!

Hey - I know how easy it is to be consumed by your career. I was, too. I loved my career; and it didn't take much for me to get 'close to the edge' - when stress was high in the office, and I hadn't been feeding myself with downtime, outside interests, doing things I loved (like dining out, or cycling), I'd be LESS efficient and productive at work, and decidedly unpleasant to be around.

So I take time now to do the things that fill up my world and my soul. By feeding myself first, I fill up my tank, so I can be more productive, higher performing, calmer, clearer thinking. Don't be fooled by the myth that still reigns in some companies that if you're first in, last out, you're a high performer. You're not. You're most likely inefficient, and very likely scared.

So go out and fill yourself up on the things you love.

It's better for your career than working 24/7.
